[Gelli Plate Face Tutorial... faces, 18..19..20]...

 Your imagination is your preview
of life's coming attractions...
.....Albert Einstein

The lovely Shirl asked if I would do a tutorial
on creating gelli plate faces...
and today I found myself with some time to do just that...

I began by rolling a coat of green acrylic paint
over the plate with my brayer...
rolling in all directions for a good coverage...
and imprinting some circles with a bottle lid...

and then pressed my paper over the top of the plate...
using a heavy non textured cardstock...

repeated the same with some aqua paint and stencils....
leaving the stencils on the plate ...
and again pressing the paper over the top..

here is the print so far...

and every time  after printing onto my paper...
I make a ghost print by pressing a sheet of copy paper onto the plate
to remove any excess paint...
I also pressed any stencils onto the paper as well...

next came beige paint, stencil and sequin waste...

 and the printed image...

pink paint, stencil and plastic doilies...

which gave me this pattern...

 yellow paint, stencil and string...
I am not covering the entire plate anymore...
forgot to take a photo of the print it gave me :(

a very light turquoise with a star stencil...

 which gave me this look...

white paint with more sequin waste...

and this is where I decided to stop...

when I did Julie Balzer's
she suggested putting your clean plate
over a magazine image
and using that as your outline...

when I first started doing the gelli plate faces...
I tried that a couple of times
and then just drew them freehand...
but it was a great way to start...

so for this exercise I decided to use one of my drawings...
I reversed the image in Word...
just used the rotate button...
because you are always going to get the reverse image
when you print...

and I popped her under my clean gelli plate...

to make it easier I drew her all in black...
and added some flow aid to my acrylic paint
so it wouldn't dry as quickly...

 then with a paint brush...
painted over the lines onto my plate...
you will notice I forgot to paint in her chin...
so I had to add that line in later..

now it is almost the end of summer here...
and the weather is ridiculously HOT at the moment...
days and nights... with little relief...

so my paint was drying very quickly...
which is why I added the flow aid...

but you can also add color to the eyes, lips, cheeks, etc..
and add in the whites of the eyes
and paint it all onto the gelli plate...
before pressing your background paper on...

I added in white to her eyes and lips
and shadow under her chin
after I made the image because of the
heat and quick drying time...

and here she is...
face number 18...

I then drew face number 19
onto the gelli plate with a freehand image...
and printed her onto the ghost background of the copy paper...
and added in the black stencil afterwards....

and face number 20...

an interesting combo of black, grey and white...

and so... that was my gelli plate play for today...
a truly fun afternoon...

What kind of pencil did you use to draw on your gelli plate? Is it just a blunt pencil?

  6. Hi Jenny! I was a little bit confused, when I opened your blog, as it was all in German :D I thought "hey Jenny has some German tutorial going on!"
But it was Google, who had turned on the translator ;-)

This jelly plate process looks very cool. It seems like you put colour onto it and then make prints on your paper, this means I could as well use a glass plate, couldn't I? That would meant I don't have to bye something new.

I love the printing process, so this is really cool! And the layers you have produced, wow!

    Great way to make faces!
