I made a picture of you once...
years ago... way before I ever even knew you...
your wire rims and everything...
on my Etch-a-Sketch...
a psychic told me to draw what would make me happy...
and I drew you...
memorized you before I shook you free...
Dolores Price...
Well it is time for our January book review and inspired art
for Darcy's Artful Reader's Challenge...
this month I read 'She's Come Undone' by Wally Lamb...
the story of Dolores Price...
*********
It is 1950... and Dolores is four
when the new television set arrives...
little does she know then
the impact that it will have on her life...
not only does it become her form of escape...
but inspiration for a world of fantasy...
and fuel for a make believe life...
the book follows her challenging, vulnerable, courageous
and sometimes hysterical journey...
her heartbreaks... betrayals...
the unlikely people that she connects with...
every one of them... someone she can relate to
from a sitcom... a soap or drama...
and ultimately...
her unraveling...
and her willingness to trust and begin again...
Thanks to the wonderful writing of Wally Lamb...
Dolores had me at the first page...
I devoured her story with anticipation...
bonded with her outrageous and lovable character...
her pivoting encounter with a beached whale...
her love of drawing on her Etch-a-Sketch...
the unusual characters that she met along the way...
her love/hate relationship with Grandma...
and her years inside Gracewood Institute...
for me it was one of those books you couldn't put down...
and yet you didn't want to end either...
I could very easily just pick it up now and read it again...
so yes.. I loved it...
thank you Dolores for taking me on an adventure...
one marvelous non stop ride...
So.. for the book inspired art...
I created an art journal page...
the 1950's television set...
Dolores...
and her attempt at feigning a world
where the sun shone all year round...
and as if on cue...
my next book arrived in the mail yesterday...
The Last Sharman... by William Whitecloud...
can't wait to make a start on it...
Happy Weekend my friends...
Jenny ♥

your artwork is fantastic, and very nostalgic for me. Our family's first TV had a 9" screen, black and white, bought for the Queen's Coronation - and we thought it was wonderful. I'm history! Everything about the artwork is great.

ReplyDeleteYour art work is gorgeous. Love that TV set and Dolores - as you see her - is truly beautiful.
The story is fictional Carmen... or as Wally Lamb says on the inside cover... it is 'his imagined novel'... it really is a superb read...

I love how your art feels like the next step after the cover of the book. As if she starts underwater, with her eyes closed, and by the time the journey is over and eyes are opened by experience and the sun is out. Lovely ;-)
